Durham

Durham has some of the best old masonry in the Triangle and some of the most neglected. Trinity Park, Watts-Hillandale, Old West Durham and Forest Hills are full of brick and stone that was laid beautifully seventy or a hundred years ago and has been quietly losing mortar ever since, usually behind a downspout that has been dumping against the wall for a decade.

Work on houses like these is matching work. We take samples, match mortar color and hardness to the original — soft old brick will spall if you repoint it with modern hard mortar — and strike the joints to the same profile so a repair does not read as a repair.
